Water Baptism

LightHouse Church celebrates water baptism 4-6 times per year (every 2-3 months). Check our events calendar for our next scheduled service. A form, which can be obtained from Connection Central (our information booth), needs to be completed prior to the service. All children under the age of 12 must be approved by our children's ministry. If you would like additional information about baptism of children please check out the kid's ministry baptism page, which explains baptism in terms that children can better understand.

The Ethiopian asked Philip, "Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?"

Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus. As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the Ethiopian said, "Look, here is water. Why shouldn't I be baptized?"

... Then they went into the water and Philip baptized him. — Acts 8:34–38

What is the Motive for Baptism?
There are three basic motives for being baptized: obedience, love, and joy. After salvation God gives us a command - to follow Christ in baptism. Baptism is the first step of obedience for the new believer in Christ.

What is the Method for Baptism?
In the Bible no one was ever baptized except by immersion of the body under water. The word baptism literally means "to dip, to plunge, ro submerge, or to immerse."

What is the Significance of Baptism?
It pictures the death of the old life before we were saved and the resurrection of a new life to be lived for the Lord Jesus Christ.

"Therefore, we are buried with Him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.  For if we have been planted together in the likeness of His death we shall be also in the likeness of His resurrection."  Romans 6:4 & 5

Baptism is far more than a ritual or religious exercise.  It is intended to be an essential part of the spiritual foundation of all new Christians.  At the time of a believer's baptism in water he outwardly affirms the inward commitment he has made to Jesus Christ as the Lord of his life.

Who is Scripturally Qualified to be Baptized?
Every Christian should be water baptized after their conversion. Then Peter said unto them,

"Repent and be baptized every one of you in the Name of the Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the  Holy Ghost."  Acts 2:38

If you will read through the New Testament you will see what stress was laid upon the ordinance. You will be struck with the suddenness with which believers were baptized after their conversion, and the great emphasis placed on the ordinance by Christ and the apostles.

A Word Concerning Infant Baptism

If the purpose of Baptism is to publicly identify a believer in Jesus Christ, you may well be asking yourself, "What was the significance of my Baptism as a baby?"

In the Bible, we find parents bringing their children to Jesus. He held them and prayed for them and told us to welcome them. But He did not baptize them, and He did not tell anyone else to baptize them. Baptism is for those who have made a personal decision to trust Christ alone for their salvation.

If you were baptized as a child, it was the intent of your parents that you would one day be a follower of Christ. Your Baptism as an adult can be viewed as the fulfillment of your parents' wishes. It in no way repudiates the Baptism you received as a child.

Is Water Baptism Necessary to be a Christian?
Water baptism is not necessary in order to be a Christian.

"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one  can boast."   Ephesians 2:8

Though you are not saved by water baptism, you are still commanded by scripture to partake of this holy act.  God promises to do a great work in your life if you are obedient to His commands.
